A highly selective antiviral agent used to treat infections caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1, HSV-2) and Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) (chickenpox/shingles). It is a guanine nucleoside analog that requires activation by a viral enzyme (thymidine kinase) before it inhibits viral DNA polymerase, halting viral replication.
