Cefuroxime Axetil

A second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, which is an oral prodrug that is hydrolyzed in the body to the active antibacterial compound, cefuroxime. It is prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections (including bronchitis), Lyme disease, and skin and soft tissue infections. Like other cephalosporins, it kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. The tablet form must be swallowed whole due to a strong, bitter taste when crushed.
