A cyclic terpene alcohol derived from peppermint or other mint oils. It is used as a counter-irritant and local anesthetic, producing a cooling sensation when applied to the skin or mucus membranes. This cooling effect is due to its ability to chemically trigger the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors. It is widely found in topical pain relievers, cough drops, and throat lozenges.
