A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) used topically as a keratolytic agent to treat acne, psoriasis, dandruff, and warts. It causes the shedding of the outer layer of skin by loosening the bonds between cells. Due to its lipophilicity, it can penetrate oil-laden follicles, making it very effective for acne.
