Enzyme Inhibitor
An enzyme inhibitor that is almost always co-administered with the antibiotic Imipenem. Cilastatin itself has no antibacterial activity but prevents the rapid renal metabolism of Imipenem by the enzyme dehydropeptidase-I. This prevents the formation of a potentially nephrotoxic metabolite and ensures adequate urinary concentrations of the active antibiotic.
