A natural ester of salicylic acid (the active metabolite of aspirin). It is widely used in topical creams and ointments to relieve muscle and joint pain. When rubbed into the skin, it acts as a counter-irritant by causing local warmth and irritation, which distracts from deeper pain. It is the active component that gives wintergreen oil its characteristic scent and efficacy.
